Week of January 18, 2016

Welcome to second semester!

This Week in AP Physics
We will begin unit 8, which covers fluid mechanics. Expect a delightful lecture, an experiment on buoyancy (floating) as we take the “polar plunge” in Lake Erie and analyze our experiences, and do some terrific problem solving. (I may have lied about the Lake Erie part. Probably better just to float some objects in beakers in the lab.)

This Week in Physics
Fittingly, as we continue to cruise through the school year, we begin second semester with our unit on momentum. Our first topic will be covered in lecture, since I don’t give homework over long weekends, but if you’d like the podcast, click here. We’ll do assignment 1 followed by a quiz as announced. When assigned, please take notes on Podcast 2 – Conservation of Momentum part 1Podcast 3 – Conservation of Momentum part 2, and Podcast 4 – Conservation of Momentum Sample Problem. We’ll follow these with assignment 2 and a fun experiment. You will write a lab report for this experiment, and it will be due on Thursday, January 28th. (Remember that the hardcopy will be due at the start of class on the due date; an upload  is due to TurnItIn.com by 3:00 of that day. Remember to write using Google Drive and share your document with me at alhsgb@gmail.com…Note that I do not use that address for email correspondence. Be sure to use the lab document as well as the lab report writing guide and lab report rubric as you write.)

Cool Science of the Week
Every year Time Magazine selects the top inventions of that year. Check out their picks for the best inventions of 2015. Some are pretty popular, and some are pretty cool. (Think holograms!)
